Die Narrenfreiheit = literally “fool’s freedom”. Historically, there was “jester’s privilege”, the right of a royal court jester to talk freely and say what he wants without being punished. To give someone Narrenfreiheit today is more about not listening to the idiot or silly person; for nothing they say really matters. Declaring someone stupid or inferior in a sort of humorous way like someone very old does with someone very young and naive, and therefore being generous with them, being above it, not caring or taking so serious what they have to say. If you give someone “Narrenfreiheit”, that’s what you are doing. ;D
