Altes Rathaus in Bamberg, Bayern (Bavaria), Southern Germany. Bamberg is located in Oberfranken (Upper Franconia) on the Regnitz, close to its confluence with the river Main. Its historic town center is a UNESCO world heritage site. By train, it’s 60 km from Nürnberg and 100 km from Würzburg. Bamberg extends over 7 hills, each crowned by a beautiful church. It’s sometimes called the “Franconian Rome”, although a running joke among local tour guides is to refer to Rome as the “Italian Bamberg”. 😀 In 2013, the GDP per inhabitant was €56,723 – well above the Bavarian average of €39,691. The InterCityExpress main line #28 (Munich-Nuremberg-Leipzig-Berlin-Hamburg) runs through here. Munich by train is less than 2 hours away.
